Safety: the most important difference
Gas generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or smell. Never run one in a house, garage, basement or near open windows. A battery power station has no engine and no exhaust, so it can sit next to your fridge or bed.
Runtime and recharging
A power station stores a fixed amount of energy (Wh). Divide that by what you run to estimate hours, or use our power station calculator. You can recharge from a wall outlet when power returns, from a car, or from solar panels during a long outage. A generator keeps running as long as you refuel it.
Noise, maintenance and storage
Power stations are close to silent and need little maintenance beyond keeping the battery charged. Generators are loud, need oil changes and fresh fuel, and stored fuel goes stale over time.
Which should you choose?
- Apartments, CPAP, Wi-Fi, a fridge for a day: a power station (about 1,000–3,000 Wh).
- Whole-house loads, well pumps and multi-day outages: a generator outside, or a larger battery system with solar.
- Many households: both, with the power station indoors for quiet, safe overnight power.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a power station indoors?
Yes. Battery power stations have no engine or exhaust, so they can be used indoors. Follow the manual for ventilation and charging guidance.
Can I run a generator in my garage with the door open?
No. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly even with doors open. Run generators outside, well away from doors, windows and vents.
How long will a power station run my fridge?
It depends on the fridge and the battery size. Many fridges use roughly 1–2 kWh per day. Use our fridge runtime calculator with the kWh on your Energy Guide label.
